Understanding Wagering Requirements at Online Casinos

Added: Nov. 18, 2014

The main types of online casino bonuses available for players today include Deposit Bonuses (aka Matching Deposit Bonuses), as well as Cash Back Bonuses and No Deposit Bonuses. You can also find Friend-Referral Bonuses, Comp Point Bonuses, Anniversary Bonuses, Alternative Payment Method Bonuses and much more. In this section we will take a quick look at how Wagering Requirements (aka Playthrough Requirements) work at online casinos.

When you accept an online casino cash bonus, you generally cannot just withdraw that bonus cash. You normally have to wager this bonus cash a certain amount of times before you can withdraw. You may have to wager that bonus cash 30x, 40x or even 50x times before you can cash out, but usually no more than this. If you fail to complete the wagering requirements within the allotted time, any bonus cash that you managed to win using your bonus cash will simply be lost and you will be left with your initial deposit to play with.

Some online casinos will give you perhaps one week to complete the wagering requirements, but others may give you a month to complete them. It also helps to play on games such as slot machines and scratchcards because these games generally count 100% towards completing your wagering requirements and games such as certain video pokers and most table and card games may only count 10% (or less in some cases) towards completing the wagering requirement.

You can quite easily find out how much you have left to wager either by contacting the customer support at the casino when logged in to your account, or you should be able to find this information somewhere in your account settings. Let’s take a look at an example of how wagering requirements work for one bonus in particular.

If you have just accepted a 100% matching deposit bonus worth $/€/£500, it means that the casino will match your deposit up to the value of $/€/£500. If you deposit just $/€/£50, the casino will also give you a $/€/£50 bonus to play with, giving you a grand total of $/€/$100. You may have to wager your bonus about 35x times in the casino before you can withdraw any winnings that you make. In this case you would have to spend a total of $/€/£1,750 in the casino before you can withdraw ($/€/£50 x 35 wagering requirement).

In some lucky cases you may only have to wager between 10x and 20x times the bonus amount, but this is quite rare and the usual amount is generally somewhere between 30x and 50x times the bonus amount. You also normally have to wager the original deposit amount as well as the bonus amount. This is fairly standard practice at most online casinos today.

The worst thing about an online casino bonus is this annoying wagering requirement policy, but it is something that you cannot avoid when accepting a bonus. Always remember to read through the T’s & C’s to find out about the bonus wagering requirements before you do accept an online casino bonus.
